Hark! A Vagrant, on Courtly Love

Hark! A Vagrant is a series of mostly one-off comics by Kate Beaton, often focused on history topics.

Today I’d like to highlight one of her comics, on courtly love.

I took a class on medieval history where the professor tried to explain courtly love, and he told us that it was a hard concept for a modern audience. What’s cool about this comic it manages to highlight that this is supposed to be all-consuming but essentially pure and non-physical. Courtly love was something that occurred outside of marriage, between a knight and his lady, and was therefore meant to be an emotional bond.

Feel free to bring up more information or divergent views on courtly love, or whatever else, in the comments.
